MOVING BREATH: A Movement & Bodywork Workshop for Contact Improvisers

In this special collaborative workshop, Alicia and Til are excited to bring together their decades of experience in bodywork (Til) and Contact Improvisation (Alicia) to discover how combining these disciplines can open up new options for our moving, dancing, sensing and being.
This workshop in our collaboration explores the breath—perhaps the most intimate movement we make, and one that lives at the intersection of the voluntary and the involuntary, the personal and the relational.
Breathing is how we touch from the inside. With every inhalation, we open; with every exhalation, we release. This rhythm of inspiration and letting go is also the rhythm of improvisation itself—a constant arising and dissolving, a flow between taking in and giving back. Breath brings us into the present moment, which is the very ground from which improvisation springs.
And yet, breath is also where we hold. Patterns of breath-holding—sometimes conscious, sometimes not—can quietly shape our movement, our responsiveness, and our capacity for connection. When breath stops, flow stops with it. When breath moves freely, we find ourselves more available: more able to sense, to adapt, to respond and to be in the improvisational connection with another in contact improvisation.
In this experiential workshop, we'll explore how directed touch can open both awareness and new possibilities for freer, more natural breathing—which in turn transforms our movement and deepens our connection with ourselves and others in our dancing. Through hands-on, solo, and partnered explorations, we'll work with the breath's deep intelligence: its role in attunement and self-regulation, its relationship to the vagus nerve and the rhythms of the heart, and the interplay between intentional and unintentional breath. By focusing on the specifics of breathing, we open toward greater freedom and possibility on the whole-being and whole dancing-body level.
Prerequisite: at least some experience in Contact Improvisation. Appropriate for all levels and all bodies.
Size is limited, and previous events filled quickly. Save your spot by registering on this page and sending your payment now.
