About this Event
Pillow Talk (1959) – Classic Romantic Comedy Overview
Pillow Talk is a beloved 1959 American romantic comedy starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson, directed by Michael Gordon.
Set in New York City, the film follows Jan Morrow (Day), a successful interior designer who shares a telephone party line with charming but self-absorbed songwriter Brad Allen (Hudson). Constantly tied up with his romantic calls, Brad’s use of the shared line drives Jan crazy—and sparks a humorous feud between them.
When Brad meets Jan in person at a nightclub, he’s instantly smitten—but knowing she dislikes him, he adopts a new identity, posing as the sincere Texan rancher “Rex Stetson” to win her affection. Jan, unaware that Rex and Brad are the same man, finds herself charmed by this seemingly earnest suitor.
The movie is filled with witty banter, classic screwball setups, and the sparkling on-screen chemistry between its leads. It also features memorable supporting performances by Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter. Pillow Talk won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and earned several additional Oscar nominations, including one for Doris Day.
Often credited with helping define the modern romantic comedy, Pillow Talk remains a timeless and delightful look at love, identity, and romance in vintage Hollywood style.
