Join us for the Mormon Battalion Commemoration – San Diego, a free, family-friendly community event celebrating an important chapter in early California history.Through hands-on pioneer activities, living history demonstrations, music, storytelling, and a traditional parade, families will experience what life was like in San Diego in the 1840s and learn about the service and legacy of the Mormon Battalion, who arrived in San Diego in January 1847.
One of the highlights of the day is the Children’s Legacy Parade, where children are invited to dress in pioneer-era clothing of their own ancestors of 1947 and march around the Old Town Plaza, honoring the courage and service of those who came before them. No bikes, please.)
Children and adults can enjoy activities such as rope-making, quilting, toy and doll making, laundering, brick making, and cooking biscuits on a stick. Live entertainment and historical programs will take place throughout the day on stage.
Visitors can also explore historic sites throughout Old Town, including the reconstructed First San Diego Courthouse, originally built by members of the Mormon Battalion.
This event is open to the public and designed to be welcoming, educational, and fun for all ages.
