Monday Night OpenMic at Hennessey's La Jolla

Heads up- I won't have an accompanist on hand. Check back on who's scheduled for July 6 and 13.
I'd like to give a big big thanks to everyone that came in to give it up at the mic and to all those that joined us to simply enjoy a night filled with remarkable performances. These nights are as enjoyable for our listening audience as it is for performers.
Justin Hansen gave tremendous support to a long long list of singers last week. The night was off the hook. Musical theater was at the forefront with spirited and energetic performances by returnees Laney Norberg, Mia Rivera, Quentin Davis, Corinne Milling, Maximo, Jessica Mueller and Anna Jacobsen.
Rounding out our spectacular night was Rita Starritt and Justin Reed on acoustic, Rhonda McCarty at the mic with 2 terrific songs, duet Bella Sophia (singing) and Jeremy (on guitar) with 2 energy infused folk numbers, Warren DeLange (always a crowd pleaser) with 2 attention grabbers (you know you'll get that from Warren every time), Annalea Selina with Danny on acoustic drove home 2 really good contemporary favorites, Joni Brobst (happy to have her back!) with 2 fun performance pieces, Liam Norberg (a duet with sister Laney). Curtiss on Ukulele with a brand new song and one of his favorites, and Alan James closing the night in high style with 2 really good americana numbers.
I have to take a minute to offer up some personal commentary around last week. First off, the mix of singers and musicians makes for quite a unique and diversified open mic. No doubt about it, it's special. To my knowledge, there isn't another open mic in town that brings the 2 together. One notable aspect of nights like these is, each genre takes the other on a joyous adventure to a less familiar yet enjoyable musical landscape. Variety takes on the role of a history lesson of sorts. The stories you all relate around the material kinda lays it out.
Next up are some of the personalities that walked through our doors. A number of them haven't been with us in months. Laney Norberg has been away at Shenandoah University studying acting, Corrine Milling and Anna Jacobsen at TCU studying Musical Theatre, and Mia Rivera away at University of Michigan studying Musical Theatre. It's impressive to note that, along their way, these exceptional creative talents have earned a variety of accolades and prestigious awards for their work. Consider the various theatre awards and the SD Broadway World Awards and the prestigious Jimmy's. They're excellent representatives to just how rich our local theatre community is.
Last note- hats off to Hennessey's and Willy for all they do for us each week. If you drop in Monday, please show them some love and order from the Happy Hour menu or grab something off the regular menu. The Food is great and the price is right!
That's about it folks. If you can self accompany or want to sing a-capella, come on in Monday night! Just keep in mind that the next dates we'll have an accompanist are July 6 and 13.
See you Monday!
