About this Event

The Ivy invites you to a meaningful discussion of climate change in the local and regional context. Mike Tidwell, author of The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue, tells the story of one year of climate impacts on his own block in Takoma Park, Maryland, from the fate of the magnificent oaks to the hopes, health, and futures of his neighbors. This is the first book of its kind to tell the story of climate change through a hyper-local lens, offering a harrowing and hopeful proxy for every street in America and every place on Earth.

Tom Pelton, host of "The Environment in Focus" on WYPR, will join Tidwell in conversation.

MIKE TIDWELL is a writer and climate change activist living in Takoma Park, Maryland. His books include Bayou Farewell (2003) about the disappearing wetlands and Cajun culture in south Louisiana. As a contributing travel writer for The Washington Post, Tidwell has won four Lowell Thomas Awards, the highest prize in American travel journalism. In 2002 he founded the Chesapeake Climate Action Network and still serves as executive director, where he has led local, state, and national campaigns for clean energy. He lives on Willow Avenue in Takoma Park with his wife Beth and their cat Macy Gray.

TOM PELTON, a national award-winning environmental journalist, has hosted "The Environment in Focus" since 2007. He also works as director of communications for the Environmental Integrity Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to holding polluters and governments accountable to protect public health. From 1997 until 2008, he was a journalist for The Baltimore Sun, where he was twice named one of the best environmental reporters in America by the Society of Environmental Journalists.
