Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a degenerative, fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. CWD was first detected in Vernal, Utah, in 2002, with a second positive case discovered near Moab in early 2003. Since then, the La Sal Mountains have developed one of the highest prevalence rates of CWD in Utah, and the Moab area remains a persistent hotspot for the disease.
CWD is always fatal, can take years before visible symptoms appear, and can persist in the environment. These characteristics make it especially difficult to manage and raise important concerns for the long-term health of local big game populations, hunting opportunities, and wildlife management across southeastern Utah.
In this presentation, the state wildlife veterinarian and district biologist will explain what Chronic Wasting Disease is, how it spreads, current disease prevalence in the Moab area and beyond, and the steps being taken to help mitigate its spread.
