Mental Health First Aid Training
About this Event
Why Mental Health First Aid?
Most of us know what to do if someone is physically injured. But when a friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or someone else in our community is experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge, it can be much harder to know how to respond.
Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. Similar to physical First Aid and CPR, the training gives you practical skills to support someone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.
You don't need to be a mental health professional to make a difference. This training is designed to help everyday people feel more prepared to recognize when someone may need support, start a conversation, respond appropriately, and help connect them to resources.
What You'll Learn
During the all-day training, you'll learn:
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges
- How to approach and interact with an adult who may be experiencing a crisis
- How to listen and provide initial support
- How to help connect someone with appropriate professional resources
- Information about trauma, substance use, and self-care
