Want to live more authentically? Are you a man who lives in or near Dunedin, New Zealand? Come join our support group where you can be 'real' about your experiences.Dunedin Men's Group meets from 7.30pm - 9.30pm on the first and third Wednesday of the month in Dunedin, New Zealand.
New members are welcomed and encouraged to come for a couple of sessions before committing to attending the group regularly (note: if joining the group regularly, a small financial contribution towards costs is expected). Please message us here to find out more details.
All details shared within the group are kept confidential and members communicate with each other with mutual respect and support. We do sometimes make public posts about themes that came up within the group - only if everyone attending the session is okay with this. When we do this, the posts are co-authored by all who attended.
The group has been meeting regularly for over 20 years. It is a supportive place where you are able to be yourself. It provides an opportunity for men to be real and authentic about their experiences and feelings in a safe environment. You are encouraged, in a gentle way, to explore difficult feelings or experiences and to experience new ways of being which you can then use in your work, social or domestic situations.
A typical meeting:
1. Mindfulness practice to allow us to slow down and contact what is happening in our lives.
2. We briefly 'check in' with each other, each sharing what feels important to share at that time - perhaps a pressing issue, feelings and thoughts that are on your mind.
3. Group therapy work, where you may choose to work on an issue either with another experienced group member or with the group as a whole. We use methods drawn principally from Hakomi, Gestalt and Psychodrama to deepen and understand the dynamics of the issue/concern and help you gain a new perspective on it. If you are open to hearing how your work touched the other members of the group, this is shared by them. This gives them a chance to outwardly reflect on what it brought up on them, often gives you further benefit also from seeing how your courage to open up within the group made a difference.
There is typically enough time for one or two group members to do this kind of work in an evening.
The group is co-facilitated by the long-standing group members.
