Gov. Whitmer is committed to making Michigan a leader in women’s mid-life health policy and asked the MWC to lead the charge! Gov. Whitmer and the MWC launched the first of several conversations on women’s mid-life health and menopause on March 12, 2025, with special guests Halle Berry and Dr. Pauline Maki. Check out this clip from the conversation:
Menopause is one of the most neglected areas of women's health, carrying profound economic, social, and healthcare consequences. Globally, over one billion women are in the menopausal transition or postmenopausal stage, with many now spending a third of their lives post menopause. Symptoms can persist for over a decade, significantly affecting long-term health outcomes, including bone, brain and cardiovascular health.
Despite its prevalence, menopause remains woefully underfunded, under-researched, and absent from global health priorities. The shortage of healthcare professionals trained in menopause care only widens the gap. With 25% of the U.S. workforce currently in some phase of menopause and $1.8 billion lost annually in productivity, addressing the issue is not just about health—it is an economic imperative.
These conversations are a call to make mid-life women’s healthcare more accessible, affordable, and empowering for women in Michigan.
