Mending Matters | Boro Mending - Mending Textiles with Laura Griffiths

In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the history, principles and techniques of Boro mending, exploring how simple stitching methods can repair, strengthen and transform worn textiles.

Who should attend?

Suitable for beginners and all skill levels. Recommended for ages 14+ due to the use of needles and hand-stitching tools. Participants interested in textiles, sustainability, slow fashion, repair culture and contemporary craft are warmly encouraged to attend.

What's included?

Participants will receive guided instruction in traditional Boro stitching and textile repair techniques, along with access to fabric pieces sourced from recycled fabrics and Japanese kimono, thread, needles and workshop materials provided by the artist. Participants will leave with practical repair skills and a reworked textile piece to continue developing at home.

What should I bring and wear?

Please bring a textile item you would like to mend or transform. Suggested items include jeans, shirts, tea towels, fabric bags, or treasured garments in need of repair.

All materials and tools will be provided.

Comfortable clothing is recommended, as this is a seated hands-on workshop.

Meet Laura Griffths-Yamamoto

Laura Griffiths-Yamamoto is an interdisciplinary artist working across textiles, installation, performance, and sound. Her practice explores repair, sustainability, memory and material reuse through textile-based processes and participatory making.

Laura lived and worked in Japan for over 13 years, studying traditional arts including Tea Ceremony (Sadō), Kimono Kitsuke, and Kintsugi. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of mottainai - wasting nothing and valuing the life of objects - her practice embraces repair as both a practical and creative act. Through workshops and installations, she encourages audiences to reconnect with materials through care, handwork, and shared making experiences.

Workshop Cancellation Policy:
Please note this workshop can be cancelled by artisan due to unforeseen circumstances or if minimum numbers are not reached - this decision is made between 2-7 days before the workshop date so don't delay in buying your ticket! In the event of the workshop being cancelled by artisan, participants will be refunded in full and as soon as possible.

Participant Cancellation Policy:
Workshops have limited spaces and involve preparation by the facilitator. Bookings cancelled up to two weeks prior to the start of the workshop may be refunded, but a 20% non-refundable administration fee will be deducted. Bookings cancelled within two weeks of the workshop commencing will not be refunded. Refunds are to be processed by the attendee through Humanitix.
