10:00 AM - Doom & Bloom: Designing for Climate Resiliency

​Join Doom & Bloom for a special live recording at KALW in San Francisco! ​This interactive event will invite special guests on stage to brainstorm ideas on how to build climate residency through unfiltered conversations about design, climate action, and our collective future.

​We’ll explore how designers can move beyond the status-quo and shape a regenerative world. Don’t miss this chance to be part of the conversation and help imagine what’s possible in the Bay Area.

Featuring

Marc O’Brien is a designer, strategist and educator who has focused his work at the intersection of design, business, and climate action since 2016. Before focusing on climate, he worked in the social impact space on technology, public education, health, and economic development projects. In 2019, he co-founded Climate Designers, a global community of designers committed to climate action. Marc teaches at California College of the Arts, leading courses in climate design and social innovation. Based in San Francisco, Marc enjoys riding his bamboo bike all over the city.

Katie Patrick is an Australian-American environmental engineer, designer, and author of How to Save the World - ranked as one of the top 5 books for social entrepreneurs by Forbes. She designs "Fitbit for the planet" software that leverages data, game design and behavioral psychology techniques to make real and measurable change on big environmental issues, and is an evangelist for bringing creativity, optimism, and imagination into the craft of saving planet Earth. She is the creator of the zero waste behavior-change game, Youtube series, and book Detrashed and the founder of UrbanCanopy.io, a map-based application that uses thermal imaging of urban heat islands and vegetation cover to encourage urban greening initiatives. Katie lives in San Francisco with her young daughter Anastasia.

Co-hosts David Helvarg and Vicki Nichols Goldstein will lead an engaging discussion with special guests, exploring marine life, ocean culture, and the pressing challenges facing our blue planet. Expect humor, inspiration, and deep dives into the future of our seas. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of the conversation!

David Helvarg is Executive Director of Blue Frontier – an ocean conservation and policy group and the author of six books: Blue Frontier, The War Against the Greens, 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, Rescue Warriors, Saved by the Sea and The Golden Shore. He is organizer of ‘Blue Vision’ Summits for ocean activists, Peter Benchley Ocean Awards (with Wendy Benchley), chaired the first global March for the Ocean in 2018 and in 2019 launched the Ocean Climate Action Plan coalition that contributed to the first Climate Action law in U.S. history including $6 billion for coastal restoration and greening ports.

Natasha Benjamin has almost 20 years’ experience working in marine science and policy and a strong dedication for ocean conservation. She is also the Media Director at Marine Applied Research & Exploration (MARE) where she works with deep sea robotic technology to collect data to inform ocean and fisheries policy. Natasha has a background in marine science and fisheries management and strong expertise in science, policy and partnership building. She also worked with the Institute for Fisheries Resources, the Ocean Conservancy and as a consultant for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and other ocean conservation groups. Natasha has a B.S. in Marine Biology from Boston University and M.S. in Marine Policy from University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS).

Melinda Briana Epler is a strategic communications leader with over 20 years of experience leading global marketing and engagement strategies that improve energy efficiency, electrification, equity, and inclusion. She is an engaging storyteller who distills complex concepts into messages that inform and inspire people to take new actions.As the Founder & CEO of Empovia, Melinda partners with leaders in tech, healthcare, government, and nonprofits on communications campaigns and behavior change initiatives that drive social and environmental change.

Elizabeth Schussler is Sr Dir of Social Change, Behavior, and Impact at The Recycling Partnership. An entrepreneurial-minded, people-centric problem solver with a background in creative, engagement research, and program design Schussler's work includes researching and designing evidence-backed actionable programs and tools using operationally sound messaging for The Recycling Partnership, a purpose-driven organization committed to building a better recycling system.

Eva Frye is a strategist, storyteller, and ecoactivism organizer with a BA in psychology serving as executive producer and host of the Climate SHIFTED podcast. After witnessing a well-supported ecoactivism project falter despite having science, solutions, and international backing, she became dedicated to studying how we can better communicate about climate issues—straight from people on the front lines.

Sarah Jessee is a radio producer with a lifelong passion for audio. After studying radio documentary at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, she contributed to Snap Judgment, WVTF, and KALW. She’s hosted listening parties everywhere from art galleries to Burning Man buses to flower shops.After spending several years in the marketing world as a strategist, Sarah has made her way back to where she belongs: the public radio community.



There is a $10 - $20 sliding scale suggested donation for this event. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
