About this Event
During this lunch seminar, Prof. Auld will introduce his work on "Sustaining Sustainability Through Private Governance: Different Logics of Influence" addressing the following questions:
Could we see sustained benefits for sustainability arising from private governance? Under what conditions and through what processes might this take place? This talk seeks to offer reflections on these questions drawing from decades of experience examining the contested development of initiatives that have generated voluntary sustainability standards and associated certification processes to check compliance with these standards and trace these products through to end-consumer markets. It will argue for a rethinking of these initiatives two embrace the possibility that sustained sustainability will require different logics of influence in different contexts. It will try to specify some of the conditions that may shape the form of logic that will operate.
Graeme Auld is Professor at the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University. His research focuses on comparative environmental politics and policy, global environmental governance, and the rise of private governance and authority. Much of his work examines the formation, evolution, and impacts of non-state and hybrid forms of global governance across economic sectors. He also researches the design and efficacy of policy aimed at tackling global problems such as climate change.
