Meet the Author: S.A. Cosby in Conversation with David Joy

Award-winning authors S.A. Cosby and David Joy will discuss their works as part of Richland Library's Broader Bookshelf program.
The Broader Bookshelf Reading Challenge encourages readers to expand their bookshelves and seek out new authors and challenging subjects. Mr. Cosby will speak about his book King of Ashes, which responds to the 2026 Broader Bookshelf prompts "Read a book by an author whose pen name includes initials" and "Read a book set in Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, or West Virginia." Mr. Joy will discuss his book Those We Thought We Knew, which responds to the prompt "Read a book about poverty."
The author talk will be followed by a reception, book sale, and book signing.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
S.A. Cosby is an Anthony Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the instant New York Times bestseller All the Sinners Bleed, which was on Barack Obama's Summer Reading List, and author of New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears, and Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, an was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal among others. When not writing, he is an avid hiker and chess player.
A twelfth generation North Carolinian, David Joy grew up in the Piedmont along the Catawba River, moved away at eighteen, and has spent the last 22 years 100 miles west in the mountains of Jackson County. His work is place-driven and deeply rooted to Appalachia, and has been translated into six languages. In 2023, his debut novel was adapted into a film starring Billy Bob Thornton and Robin Wright.
Joy is the author of five novels, including Those We Thought We Knew (winner of the 2023 Willie Morris Award and the 2023 Thomas Wolfe Prize), When These Mountains Burn (winner of the 2020 Dashiell Hammett Award), The Line That Held Us (winner of the 2018 Southern Book Prize), The Weight of This World, and Where All Light Tends to Go (Edgar finalist for Best First Novel). His stories and creative nonfiction have appeared in a number of publications, most recently Garden & Gun, The New York Times Magazine, and TIME. He is also the author of the memoir Growing Gills: A Fly Fisherman's Journey and a coeditor of Gather at the River: Twenty-Five Authors on Fishing, a book he spearheaded to raise money for the CAST For Kids Foundation.
Joy lives in Tuckasegee, North Carolina with his dog Edie Munster.
