Joe Meek was born on the 5th of April 1929 at 1 Market Square - Newent, Gloucestershire. An electronics genius from an early age, he went on to change the face of popular music by becoming the UK's first truly independent record producer, recording in his ramshackle home studio in North London. He scored 3 number one hits, including the worldwide smash, Telstar by The Tornados. He also had dozens of other chart hits, and before his tragic death in 1967, he recorded the likes of Tom Jones, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and many, many more.
On what would have been his 96th birthday, The Joe Meek Society is holding a very special 2 part event. All the action takes place at the Memorial Hall in Newent town centre, a literal stones throw away from 1 Market Square.
