UTC-07:00Location
800 Alma St, Menlo Park, CA, United States, California 94025 | Menlo Park, CA
Join us to learn about banig, traditional Filipino handwoven mats. Artist Kenneth Tan will teach you how to draw simple line patterns inspired by Filipino tattoos and weaving. Use these patterns to create your own unique banig!
This art session is fun and relaxing, with music playing while you try out the meditative experience of focusing on drawing one square of your banig at a time, and within that one square, focusing on drawing one line at a time.
About Kenneth Tan:
Kenneth Tan is author of Crescenciana: A Memoir in Words and Illustrations, about his relationship with his Lola (grandmother), Crescenciana, a survivor of World War II and the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Together, they formed The Lola x Kenneth Collaboration: Crescenciana made watercolor paintings and Kenneth drew her stories on top of them. In Crescenciana, Kenneth weaves together their artwork, conversations, and memoirs to tell his grandmother’s life story. He has shared stories about Crescenciana Tan on NPR and StoryCorps, and he is a recipient of the Leigh Weimers Emerging Artists Award.
