Upon completion of this course, participants will:
Medical Errors
1. Understand the background and definitions of the terms "medical error" and "medical accident".
2. Identify most preventable errors or "adverse effects" in dentistry.
3. Recognize key factors which contribute to errors in dentistry.
4. Develop a Root Cause Analysis Protocol aimed at preventing errors in routine dental procedures.
5. List best practices to promote dental practice safety.
6. Describe the legal definitions related to the standard of care, negligence, and malpractice.
7. Identify the reasons for dentists and dental hygienists to carry professional liability insurance policies.
Domestic Violence
Is it possible that there are links between personality types and the risk for domestic
violence? This course will explore current statistics in domestic violence incidences, at-
risk groups, the effects of COVID on domestic unrest, and the personality types that
may impose risk factors for abuse and/or links to human trafficking. Mrs. Hammaker will
also discuss reporting obligations of dental health providers, recognition of abuse and
will provide helpful links and resources that are available for victims of abuse.

Dr. Adela Mills, CRDH, CASDH, MD Ed., EdD, FADHA
With over four decades of dental experience, Adela Mills brings a
wealth of insight and knowledge to the table in her role of Founder and
lead Dental Hygiene Coach with Elite Dental Hygiene™. Her superb
networking abilities and people skills have gained her a reputation as a
trusted ally and valued resource to the dental practices she serves. Adela
has expanded her dental clinical skills with her experience as a Certified
Dental Assistant, Certified Registered Dental Hygienists, Dental Insurance
Provider Relations Manager, Dental Office Administrator, Dental Educator,
Program Director, Coach, and CE Broker Approved Provider.
Barbara G. Hammaker, CRDH, BASDH, MHSc
Barbara Hammaker graduated from Palm Beach Junior College in 1977 and has over
40 years of clinical dental hygiene experience. She graduated with a bachelor’s in
dental hygiene from St. Petersburg College in 2006, and with a master’s degree in 2009
from Nova Southeastern University. Barbara is a lifetime member of ADHA and FDHA.
Barbara has been in dental hygiene education since 1994 and has been the lead
instructor of dental hygiene at Broward College in Davie, FL since 2010. She has been
a reviewer for medical and dental textbooks and has had multiple articles published in
ADHA’s ACCESS magazine.
