‘Combination strategies within radiobiology – past and future directions’
About this Event

Keynote Speaker: Professor Ludwig Dubois

Date: Thursday 10th September, 16:00-17:00 (coffee and cake from 15:30)

About This Event

How can combining radiotherapy with other treatment strategies help improve outcomes for people with cancer?

Join us for a welcome lecture with Professor Ludwig Dubois, Chair in Experimental and Translational Radiobiology at The University of Manchester. Professor Dubois will highlight selected past strategies for sensitising tumours to radiotherapy and outline the rationale for future combinations that will shape his work in Manchester over the next five years.

The lecture will explore how experimental and translational radiobiology can support smarter treatment combinations, with a focus on tumour hypoxia, radiation response, normal tissue toxicity, immunotherapy combinations and future opportunities for personalised radiotherapy.

Professor Dubois will discuss:

  • Combination strategies in radiobiology: How treatment combinations can help sensitise tumours to radiotherapy.
  • Tumour hypoxia: Why low oxygen levels in tumours matter for treatment response and disease progression.
  • Translational radiation biology: How laboratory discoveries can inform future radiotherapy approaches.
  • Normal tissue toxicity: How research can help reduce the impact of radiation on healthy tissue.
  • Future directions: How new treatment combinations will shape Professor Dubois’ research programme in Manchester.

About The Keynote Speaker

Professor Ludwig Dubois is Full Professor and Chair in Experimental and Translational Radiobiology at The University of Manchester. He trained in Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven and completed his PhD in Medical Sciences at Maastricht University, where his work focused on non-invasive imaging of tumour hypoxia, hypoxia response and drug delivery.

His research focuses on translational radiation biology, including functional imaging of tumour hypoxia, hypoxia-targeted therapies, radiation-induced normal tissue toxicity, immunotherapy combinations and preclinical dose painting strategies. He has co-authored more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, holds three patents and has secured more than €18 million in research funding from national, European, international and industry sources.

Professor Dubois has an international reputation in imaging and targeting the tumour microenvironment. He has delivered more than 80 invited lectures, received the ESTRO-Varian Juliana Denekamp Award in 2015 and contributed to multiple European research consortia. He is also Chief Scientific Officer of the start-up company Convert Pharmaceuticals.

Who should attend?

This lecture is suitable for researchers, clinicians, students and anyone with an interest in radiotherapy, radiation biology, translational cancer research or personalised treatment approaches.
