From the 1860s to the 1920s, Fountain Square, Norwood and Barrington had May Day celebrations. These celebrations were considered their Black Military Honor day because the USCT were not honored in the Veteran’s ceremonies for the state of Indiana. This year we will revive this program based on the oral histories of elders in the communities that remember these celebrations. In collaboration with GangGang's I Made Rock and Roll, we will have a real celebration for the 160th anniversary of the 28th Regimentat the Indiana War Memorial. Dr Frank Smith, Executive Director of the African American Civil War Memorial Museum, will give a presentation on the history and impact of the USCT across our nation, but specifically on the Southeast side of Indianapolis.
