Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History Presents: Maud Gatewood Takeover, an unprecedented exhibition celebrating one of the south’s most acclaimed artists. Maud Gatewood Takeover will showcase hundreds of works by the celebrated Caswell County native.
The exhibition opens exclusively for DMFAH members with a special reception on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 6:00 PM, offering an intimate first look at the extraordinary range of Gatewood’s art.
The exhibit will open to the public on Saturday, October 4, 2025, inviting visitors to explore the depth and evolution of her career.
This expansive exhibit will span multiple galleries throughout the historic Sutherlin Mansion, transforming the museum into a captivating Maud Gatewood experience. Visitors will encounter works from DMFAH’s own collection, including a rare portfolio of Gatewood’s works created during her early years, offering a deeper look at her creative vision.
In keeping with DMFAH’s commitment to community outreach—and reflecting the breadth and generosity of Gatewood’s many acquaintances—more than 50 works, many of which will be on public view for the first time, will be on loan from partnering institutions and Gatewood’s family and friends.
Complementing the exhibition, the documentary Gatewood: Facing the White Canvas by The Empowerment Project will be screened every weekend at DMFAH from October through December and a series of guest speakers will present talks on Gatewood’s life, artistic process, and lasting influence, providing visitors with a rich understanding of the artist.
A native of Caswell County, Maud Gatewood (1934–2004) spent much of her teaching career in Danville and is widely celebrated by art historians, curators, museum directors, and collectors as a defining figure in Southern art and one of North Carolina’s best artists. Known for her compositions, which spanned a wide range of themes, from landscapes, figures, architecture, and abstract forms, Maud Gatewood was a fiercely independent voice in American art. Her work reflects both her Southern roots and her global perspective, shaped by her travels across the United States and Europe.
