Mau Rākau Workshop
Local educator Hohaia Brown introduces rangatahi and adults to the tikanga, whakapapa and foundational techniques of mau rākau (Māori martial arts). Kai and kōrero included afterwards.
The session focuses on safety, stance, footwork, basic strikes and blocks, and the cultural narratives that give each movement its meaning. Participants learn through wānanga-style instruction: whakawhanaungatanga, kōrero tuku iho, hands-on drills, partnered activities, and a closing reflection.
The kaupapa emphasises discipline, confidence, cultural pride, and community connection.
