DETAILS:
This demonstration workshop aims to demystify the process of off-camera flash photography. By understanding the fundamental differences between natural light and flash photography, you will gain a solid foundation in controlling light and shaping images.
This session runs about 1 1/2 hours with the last 30 minutes used for hands-on learning and Q&A.
KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES INCLUDE:
- Understanding the flash exposure quadrangle: Students will learn how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO interact differently when using flash compared to natural light and how a fourth element changes the relationships.
- Balancing ambient and flash light: Students will learn how to balance the intensity of flash with ambient light to achieve desired lighting ratios and create dramatic or subtle effects.
- Light shaping and modifiers: Students will get an introduction to the different light modifiers (softboxes, umbrellas, grids, etc.) to shape the quality of light and create desired effects.
- Problem-solving and experimentation: Students will develop a problem-solving approach to lighting challenges, experimenting with different techniques to achieve their desired results.
- Introducing flash modes: Students will also get a brief introduction to the different flash modes (manual, TTL, HSS) and understand when to use each mode effectively.
- Building your OCF strobist kit: Students will learn the basic kit setup for doing off-camera flash on location without a lot of gear.
If time permits, one or two select students will be walked through a hands-on practice run. students will gain a deeper understanding of off-camera flash photography, enabling them to create dynamic and creative images.
WHAT TO BRING:
- Definitely bring your camera: Take plenty of photos of the setups. If time permits I plan on walking one or two students through the setup process. I shoot with Godox flashes. If you have a Godox trigger, bring it with you.
- Clean memory card and fresh batteries: Make sure you have plenty of room on your memory card and a full battery so you can document the process.
- Dress weather appropriately: This is an outdoor event so make sure you dress appropriately for the weather. Wear comfortable shoes.
- Bring water and a snack: Depending on the outdoor temperature, it’s nice to have some water and a snack or two on hand, just in case.
- Flash and tripod NOT NEEDED: Due to the short session length this will be mostly a demonstration workshop. You don’t need the extra weight. If time permits I will call on one or two attendees to walk through the setup process.
WHERE TO MEET UP:
We will be assembling on the Milford Town Green at the gazebo. Feel free to find parking along the street or in one of the various parking lots in the vicinity.
