Lesley Smith portrays the first woman she played at Tutbury Castle 26 years ago and has been in demand all over the UK ever since. It is a tragic tale of great power and a terrible fall from grace. Extensive research over the years had gone into this presentation. Lesley is a Fellow of the Society of the Antiquaries of Scotland, partly because of her published work on Mary Queen of Scots.Mary Queen of Scots is one of history’s polarising characters. For some, she was a victim and a Catholic martyr, for others a manipulative schemer and the author of her own misfortune. Queen of Scotland by birth and of France by marriage, she was deposed and imprisoned in Scotland after she was implicated in the murder of her second husband. Having escaped from prison in Scotland, she fled to England, hoping for support from her cousin Elizabeth, but found herself a prisoner once again.
Mary was held prisoner at Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire on four occasions. She left Tutbury for the last time in 1585 when she was moved to nearby Chartley. From there she was sent to Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire where she was executed in 1586.
Here is a chance to meet Mary Queen of Scots in full authentic costume during her imprisonment at Tutbury, where she spent a lot of time reading, writing letters, and doing embroidery. Learn about Mary’s three marriages and about life in general in Tudor times.
Tickets are £14 per person (over 16’s only) and must be purchased in advance.
