Tuesday, February 3, 7:30PMMartha Graham Dance Company: A Dual Centennial Event!
Featuring a special appearance by John Rubinstein
Tickets: $35-$63
Celebrate 100 years of the 'grandest small-town theater in America', and the oldest dance company in America, with this dual centennial event! This program features iconic works of Graham's alongside newly commissioned dances by some of the most dynamic choreographers working today.
Gettysburg College’s Majestic Theater is located approximately an hour and a half from D.C. and Baltimore, and right in the heart of Downtown Gettysburg, surrounded by many shops and restaurants to visit.
This program includes Appalachian Spring (1944), Immediate Tragedy (1937/2020), Lamentation (1930), We the People (2024), and En Masse (2025). We will welcome Tony Award-winner John Rubinstein (Pippin, Children of a Lesser God) back to the Majestic Theater after his portrayal of President Eisenhower in ‘Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground’ last October. This special performance pays homage to the only other time Rubinstein performed ‘Simple Song,’ which was in 1978 under the baton of Leonard Bernstein himself for the first Kennedy Center Honors, for which his father, Arthur, was an inaugural recipient.
Martha Graham (1894-1991) is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, alongside Picasso, James Joyce, Stravinsky, and Frank Lloyd Wright, single-handedly defining contemporary dance as a uniquely American art form. The Martha Graham Dance Company has been a leader in evolving that art form since its founding in 1926. It is both the oldest dance company in the United States and one of the most celebrated on the planet.
This performance is made possible in part by the J. William Warehime Fund of the Majestic Theater Centennial Endowment, a special gift from the J. William Warehime Foundation, and the Lydia Ziegler Clare Fund.
