Marking: A world cup ritual. Public viewing day 1.

It is a common tactic in football, to try to mark the best players on the pitch out of the game. It can be a frustrating tactic but it also a compliment to the players who have been seen and identified as key to the success of their team.

In Mexico, where FIFA 2026 is co-hosted, An ofrenda is the offering placed in a home altar during the annual and traditionally Mexican Día de los Muertos celebration. An ofrenda, which may be quite large and elaborate, is usually created by the family members of a person who has died and is intended to welcome the deceased to the altar setting.

A libation is a ritual pouring of a liquid in memory of the dead. Often a spirit or drink favoured by the departed such as whisky or beer.

It is said that an estimated six thousand five hundred people died building and servicing the 2022 Qatar World Cup stadia, infrastructure and associated construction projects during the decade long construction period. We don’t know if that number is correct. Or the names of the people who died. Or why or where they died.

Marking: A world cup ritual is an improvised ritual, a bit like an ofrenda, a bit like a wake, to commemorate and celebrate those workers.
