Join us for a virtual trip with award-winning marine conservationist and photographer, Jean Tresfon, as he shares his art and passion for protecting ocean life. Jean will take us on a journey to explore the oceans around us, the creatures that live in the water and share insights on how we can ensure the sustainability of our magnificent coastal areas.Jean Tresfon is a born and bred Capetonian living in the southern suburbs. He started diving in 1989 while still at school, and was constantly asked by friends and family what he sees underwater. So alien was this undersea world to his terrestrial counterparts that he found it almost impossible to explain, and decided to learn photography so he could show others the magic that lies beneath the surface. In those now far-off film camera days the learning curve was steep and it took many years for Jean to learn the dark art of underwater photography. With the advent of quality digital SLR cameras around 20 years ago the photography world changed completely, underwater photographers were no longer limited to just 36 shots per dive and the undersea realm started to be seen by more and more people. Then in 2010, quite by chance, Jean found himself learning to fly gyrocopters, and of course his cameras came along for the ride. Nowadays he splits his time between flying and diving, but continues to focus on marine conservation photography. Jean works with many NGO's and scientific organisations, such as the Whale Unit, Shark Spotters, Sea Search and the DFFE. On the home front Jean is married with 3 teenage children, enjoys hiking, surfski paddling, mountain biking and open water swimming. He is passionate about Cape Town and continues to champion the cause of pollution and plastic free oceans.
