Winter is the perfect season to learn how trees store energy—and how we can tap into it! Drop in for a hands-on demonstration of the maple syrup-making process, from tree identification to sap collection and boiling. Participants will learn how to identify local trees in winter, especially sugar maples, and discover the science behind turning sap into syrup. This program highlights seasonal natural history and a traditional Appalachian practice still used today. And, of course, you'll get to sample locally made maple syrup!This program is recommended for families and participants of all ages. Please drop-in at the Hickory Ridge Outdoor Classroom anytime between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. For more details about accessibility and walking surfaces, read the Essential Eligibility Criteria. Expect to spend approximately 30–45 minutes at the program depending on participation.
The cost of this program is $5 per participant. Children under 5 are free with a paying adult.
Please come prepared with warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and a water bottle. Pets are not allowed on programs, except service animals.
