About Manual for the Displaced
Manual for the Displaced is a musical poetry film by visual storyteller Jeremy Flohr and poet/musician Robin Block. Taking inspiration from their own roots in both the Netherlands and Indonesia, they examine one of the most universal questions of all: what does it take to truly feel at home?
The film’s theme of displacement and belonging deeply resonates with many persons that have a colonial family history, a migration background or an upbringing between different cultures. A sensory work of art that gives words, sound, movement and images to diaspora, resilience and identity, the film won the Netherlands Poetry Film Festival in 2021 and other international prizes.
About Robin Block and Jeremy Flohr
Poet/musician Robin Block and visual storyteller and filmmaker Jeremy Flohr are both Dutch artists with family roots in Indonesia. As the ‘third generation’ both have made many works about the shared stories of the Netherlands and Indonesia.
A poet, musician and performer, Robin Block has worked on various projects in both Indonesia and the Netherlands. After participating in the collaboration project “My Story, Shared History”, Block and Angelina Enny published a bilingual poetry collection “In Between, Di Antara”. As a musician, he toured Java last year, organized by Erasmus Huis.
Jeremy Flohr is a visual storyteller and filmmaker who has produced a number of works exploring the colonial past. His collaborations include projects with Erasmus Huis Jakarta, Museum Maluku and the National Indies Memorial. This includes the documentary film of Eko Supriyanto’s “Between Two Moons” and Shishani’s online concert for Erasmus Huis.
