PROGRAM NOTE
Based on The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Spike Lee’s landmark biopic was a sonic boom in film, Black Cinema, and culture in the 90s. Hitting screens soon after the Rodney King beating, this was more than just a moment. X caps were everywhere and a lot of young African Americans felt the need to dig into and re-examine their history. This film affected the tone of hip hop music and culture. Black excellence, Black history, and Blackness in general were hip. The community needed this film. As Boyz N the Hood was the “now”, Spike Lee’s Malcolm X was the “then”. An important American film that everyone needs to see.
