Brushes are common household items and have a prominent place in folklore. It is a device for cleaning and this can be in terms of removing negativity as well as a physical tidying up.
They sweep away bad fortune and protect against evil.
'A new broom, sweeps clean' is a proverb about new leadership bringing in new ideas and people and getting rid of the old, but like many proverbs, the ending has been forgotten - 'but an old broom knows the corners' also puts a value on experience and knowledge.
We should strive for a balanced blend of the old and the new, combining freshness of the new with the experience of the old.
Anna is a local weaver and basketmaker who grows her own willow in the Upper Swansea Valley. She has a background in instructing outdoor activities and leads overseas expeditions and cycle tours, as well as teaching woodland management for the Smallwoods Association and running community engagement projects and woodland wellbeing sessions for Coed Lleol.
