Make your own Art Materials from Plants
with Emma & Sarah from Wild Studio
Saturday, 15th February
10am – 3.30pm
Creative Campus
$160
You will learn how to make artist's drawing charcoal sticks, which woods work well, how to prepare them, and how to make a simple charcoal kiln. You will then be guided through the process to make your own rich black inks for drawing and lettering, and learn the different ways that these inks can be used. With foraged materials, we will craft simple and effective dip pens, that can be styled to suit many nib types for script or line drawings.
After a short lunch break, we will dive into the world of botanical colour. We will share with you our research into the possibilities for extracting beautiful, vibrant hues from common plants and weeds, and take you through the process from start to finish. You will make your own coloured painting inks (similar to liquid watercolours) to take home. There will also be time to play and experiment with these materials.
*Please note, there is a Chinese NY Festival happening in the Village on this day. So please manage your travel accordingly to accomodate for traffic and delays and limited parking. We will have a number of Campus parks available inside the grounds, next to the Campus, but these are limited - so first in first served. But, the bus stops right across the road!
Wild Studio is an Art and Research Studio located in the Kauaeranga Valley of Coromandel, founded by artists Emma Cowan and Sarah Nicholson. Our mission is to explore and develop sustainable art practices by creating effective art materials from locally-harvested plants. Our trials and explorations include coaxing colour from a wide variety of plants, crafting art-making tools (brushes, pens, drawing charcoal) from our own harvested materials, and foraging for other creative art-making possibilities within the ecosystems around us.
We hope to cultivate a sense of resourcefulness through the sharing of our practice. Through documentation and educational offerings, we aim to inspire and share with others the possibilities for creating quality, meaningful art practices that have a strong connection to, and respect for place.
