Back in 2024 we held a sewing bee to furnish our 1850s barracks with haversacks (now on display). One of the questions we got most from our wonderful volunteers was: "Can I make one to take home?" Well, now you can!In a continuation of our Make History! Programs, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, Interpretive Programs Assistant and sewist Danielle Funiciello will guide registrants in making a canvas haversack like those used in the mid-19th century. The workshop will be $10 per person to cover cost of materials.* All tools and materials are provided. Pre-registration is required as this class is limited to 12 people. Call (315) 343-4711, Monday-Friday 9am-4:30pm to claim a spot.
This will be a more difficult project than last year's 18th-century pockets. We will be sewing scalloped edges and button holes. There will be diagrammed take-home instructions if you are not able to complete the project during the workshop (which is very possible). There is a recommended age limit of 12+. Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult (whether or not the adult is also doing the craft).
*All money collected goes back into a fund by the Friends of Fort Ontario used to furnish future programs like this.
