Mierle Laderman Ukeles was inspired by Marcel Duchamp to express the notion that routine maintenance – from changing diapers to picking up city trash – can be acts of performance art. Maintenance Artist isn’t just the story of the first resident artist in the New York Sanitation Department, it is about work and art in our last half century. Penetrating, provocative, funny, and moving, Maintenance Artist calls for a new way to be in and view our world.Arrive early and see a short film, “Working Will Be The Work,” by the Nyack Department of Public Works, projected on the side of a DPW truck.
Meet the Filmmaker: Toby Pearl Freilich will discuss her film with Kris Burns, chair of the Nyack Public Arts Advisory Committee and founding director of Rivertown Film Society.
Community Partners: Village of Nyack, Nyack Public Arts Advisory Committee, Edward Hopper House, GARNER Arts Center.
A Rivertown Film 25th Year Special Event.
