JOIN US for a free evening of short films about the maintenance, care and repair of public art and public space. Featuring films that celenrate the public realm pieces in Basildon, including conversations with the artists and conservators who have taken care of themEach of the films portrays a different model of how maintenance is performed: physical acts of cleaning and repairing; political acts of advocacy and campaigning; and spiritual acts of blessing and memorial. What from all of these approaches can encourage collective motivation to look after our surroundings ?
The event will also include a Q & A session with the Care Contractors Art Collective members, and a chance to socialise and chat with friends!

The Anthem (2006)

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's The Anthem is a celebration of film making and the collective viewing experience. An old lady is planning a ritual to channel energy to the audience to give them a clear mind. In a large set piece the old woman performs a ritual with friends as young men dance to an especially composed electric soundtrack both in praise of the Cinema God. The ritual is supposed to make a very bad film — such as many Hollywood fares — watchable, and make a good film a masterpiece.

How Do We Care (2024)

On October the 12th 2024 members of the public were invited to join a workshop devised by Care Contractors collective artist Shaun Badham called ‘How Do We Care’. Attendees formed a temporary maintenance squad, and undertook cleaning and repair activities. The film shows splitscreen headcam footage from the workshop across the locations of the Compass Bowl, Animal Fresco and Armillary Sundial environmental artworks by Wenday Taylor.

A film that highlights the use of wayfinding and signage placing identity on landmarks, and navigation of place and people. Featuring extensive footage of Basildon public art, archival recordings. The soundtrack is a mix of racing music and an in depth interview with sculptor Wendey Taylor describing the commissioning, design and construction process of her famous underpasses in the town.
