In this engaging and approachable workshop, students will transform simple drawings into vibrant works of art using carefully selected pieces of magazine paper.
By focusing on color, texture, and value, you’ll learn how to “paint” with paper and watch your image come to life piece by piece.
No drawing experience is required. If you have a simple image you would like to recreate, such as a portrait or landscape, you are welcome to bring an 8" x 10" color copy to transfer onto your canvas.
Kathy will also provide a variety of pre-drawn images, including animals, still life, and other subjects, so you can jump right in without any pressure.
This class is perfect for adults and older children and makes a great shared creative experience for parents, grandparents, and teens.
You’ll learn how to:
• Break down an image into shapes, light, and color
• Transfer your design onto canvas
• Select and cut magazine pieces with intention
• Build layers to create depth and realism
• Finish and seal your collage
You will enjoy watching a simple line drawing come to life using only cut magazine pages, and leave with a process you can easily recreate at home for hours of creative exploration.

About Instructor
Kathy spent most of her professional career as a university professor teaching psychology and special education. Since retiring from education, she has been fortunate to explore a second career in art and has taken courses from MGCCC, online instructors, and wonderfully talented Hancock Arts professionals. Her strengths are manipulating materials to create mixed media paintings and sculptures. You may have seen her self-portrait in the gallery at The Arts Hancock County using the magazine page collage technique.
