Ambition is a hell of a drug. Love makes it worse. Macbeth comes to the lawn of the 1897 Poe House at the Museum of the Cape Fear for a dark, moody, elemental outdoor theater experience from Sweet Tea Shakespeare, running October 1–4 and 8–11, 2026. Directed by Michael Curtis Houck, this immersive production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy takes audiences on a journey of uneasiness—where absurdity can turn to horror, comedy can curdle into tragedy, and one really bad decision can ruin absolutely everybody’s week.
At the center of it all are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. They aren’t monsters when we meet them. They’re a couple who love each other deeply, get dazzled by a possibility they aren’t equipped to refuse, do one regrettable and irreversible thing, and then start improvising their way through the consequences. Staged in the round, this Macbeth puts the audience right in the thick of the unraveling. Dark. Moody. Elemental. Sometimes strangely funny. Increasingly terrifying. Featuring Sweet Tea Shakespeare’s signature preshow, the experience invites audiences to watch ambition, guilt, devotion, and fate collide at dangerously close range.
