Gain essential knowledge about protecting yourself from illnesses spread by ticks and mosquitoes. This session will explore the local risks, signs and symptoms of common vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus, and practical prevention strategies to safeguard your health.
Part 2 (11:00 AM to 12:00 PM) – Finding Balance: Managing Mosquitoes and Protecting Pollinators
Presented by Gabriella de Souza, M.S.
Learn how to manage mosquitoes effectively in your home landscape while safeguarding pollinator populations. This session covers common pesticide practices, the critical role of pollinators in our ecosystem, and integrated pest management approaches that support both comfort and conservation.

Meet Bobby Brinkley
Bobby Brinkley, RN is a Communicable Disease Nurse with the New Hanover County Health Department, bringing several years of experience in protecting community health. In his role, he investigates and monitors reportable illnesses, provides guidance to the community and healthcare providers, and leads public education efforts on preventing the spread of disease. He has a strong background in addressing vector-borne illnesses in North Carolina and is dedicated to helping residents understand the risks and steps they can take to stay healthy.

Meet Gabriella de Souza
Gabriella de Souza is a plant ecologist, science communicator, and community educator dedicated to connecting people with the natural world through engaging, research-based education. Based in Wilmington, North Carolina, Gabriella brings over a decade of experience in plant science to her work, blending academic expertise with creative outreach.
Gabriella holds a B.S. in Biology and Environmental Sciences and a Master of Science in Biology from UNC Wilmington. Her passion for environmental education is evident in her dynamic workshops, public presentations, and collaborations with nonprofits, schools, and conservation organizations.
With a focus on native plant conservation and science literacy, Gabriella’s mission is to cultivate curiosity and confidence in every green thumb—whether they're just starting out or seasoned gardeners ready to deepen their ecological impact.
