Lunch & Learn: Filled with Fortitude Book Discussion

Join us for a compelling conversation with author Sally Hobert Whiting and chief historian Richard Pickering, exploring the genre of historical fiction in a 17th-century context.

In this month’s Lunch and Learn, we welcome you into an insightful discussion on what it means to write historical fiction set in 1620 and learn about the detailed research process behind it. The book discussion will be anchored on Whiting’s recent book, Filled with Fortitude, a historical fiction novel about Elizabeth Tilley’s journey on the Mayflower in 1620. Whiting and Pickering will examine topics such as historical research methods, the balance between fiction and nonfiction, and Whiting’s process of bringing the themes of resilience to life in the novel. We encourage reflection on several questions: How does a historian approach entering the mind of a pilgrim? What can readers take away from a historical novel living in the 21st century?

Speaker Bios:

Sally Hobert Whiting

Sally Hobert Whiting is a thirteenth-generation granddaughter of Elizabeth Tilley. She grew up in Wyoming, taught school in California, and worked in elementary and secondary educational publishing for most of her professional career. She and her husband retired to Virginia in 2007 and presently enjoy an extended family of six married children and sixteen grandchildren.

Richard Pickering

Richard is the Deputy Executive Director and Senior Historian at Plimoth Patuxet Museums. He has been with the Museum for more than 40 years and has served as a historical role player, research associate, Director of Education and Director of Special Projects. He studied English and American Studies in graduate programs at Bridgewater State University, the College of William and Mary, and the University of Connecticut. Richard oversees the Museum’s ongoing research as well as educational and theatrical programs. He has spoken at the United Nations and Smithsonian National Museum of American History and has appeared on NPR, PBS, History Channel, NECN, NBC News, ABC’s The Chew, and Martha Stewart Living Radio. How do I access the event on Zoom?

Zoom info will be on the bottom of your ticket. A reminder with the link is also sent 1 hour before the program is set to begin.

What can I bring into the event?

You may bring a bagged lunch or snack to enjoy while you experience the lecture series. Our Plentiful Café is open from March 14 to November 29. Lunch is not included in the ticket price.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

You do not have to bring your printed ticket to the event. You may give your name to the Event Facilitator at check-in.

What's the cancellation/refund policy?

At least two weeks withdrawal notice is required for a full refund.

No refund or credit will be received, when given less than 7 days notice, for cancellation or reschedule; all sales are final.
