Lucia Scalisi restores the painted panels of the Lord Mayor’s State Coach
About this Event
The Painter-Stainers’ Livery Company is delighted to invite you to a unique and special fundraising afternoon with Lucia Scalisi - expert and presenter from the popular BBC programme, ‘The Repair Shop’. She will be describing the fascinating process of her restoration of the exquisite painted panels that are such a notable decorative feature of the Lord Mayor of London’s state coach, said to be the oldest ceremonial vehicle in regular use in the world.
Formerly senior conservator at The Victoria and Albert Museum, Lucia brings her experience, forensic analysis and technical skill to bear on a unique set of paintings created by the celebrated coach painter, Giovanni Cipriani. The vehicle was commissioned in 1757, constructed in Holborn and designed by the architect Sir Robert Taylor, who was also responsible for the distinguished pediment of The Mansion House.
The State Coach is an intrinsic part of the ceremonial life of the City of London. This well-known symbol of the self-governance, economic power and enduring cultural significance of the Square Mile survives to continue its time-honoured role through the painstaking ministrations of people such as Lucia.
The afternoon will consist of an illustrated lecture, question and answer session and an opportunity to meet Lucia. Refreshments will be served.
