The 2026 Aubert Lecturer is distinguished sociologist Loïc Wacquant. Loïc Wacquant is the 30th Aubert Lecturer, honored in the memory of Vilhelm Aubert for outstanding sociology and social analysis. He is Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Researcher at the Centre Européen de Sociologie et de Science Politique, Paris. He is a leading sociologist of urban marginality, ethnoracial domination, embodiment, and the penal state. His work is known for influential concepts such as advanced marginality, territorial stigmatization, carnal sociology, and the punitive management of poverty. His major books include Body and Soul (2004), Urban Outcasts (2008), Punishing the Poor (2009), The Invention of the “Underclass” (2022) Bourdieu in the City (2023), Racial Domination (2024), and Rethinking the Penal State (2026). He has been a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and has received the Lewis A. Coser Award from the American Sociological Association’s Theory Section.
The Vilhelm Aubert Memorial Lecture is a collaborative event between the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo and the Institute for Social Research. The programme is divided into two parts: the Aubert Lecture and the Aubert Debate.
