Me and My Girl, by Noel Gay, L. Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber, premiered in 1937 on London’s West End. This version of Me and My Girl was revised by Stephen Fry and was first performed starring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson in 1985. The story is set in 1930s England where Bill Snibson, an unapologetically unrefined cockney bloke, is revealed to be the new Earl of Hareford. His newly discovered aristocratic relations are horrified and bring him to Hareford Hall in an attempt to educate him into the ways of the gentry! His Lambeth sweetheart, Sally, is immediately declared an ‘inappropriate’ match and Bill’s efforts at refinement don’t always go as planned to hilarious and chaotic effect.
With a host of comic characters, witty one-liners and several toe-tapping, uplifting songs such as ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’, ‘The Lambeth Walk’, ‘Leaning on a Lampost’ and the title song ensure a feel-good musical about propriety, family and obligations of nobility.
