About this Event
Join folk singer Johnny Campbell and Team Hwæt! for a very special gig, celebrating the second anniversary of our collaborative Lore of the Land guided folklore walks.
Johnny's music, as well as that of our very special guest, Katie Spencer tell wonderous stories of their own. Both hailing from Yorkshire, their music is very much rooted in the landscape of these lands and the tales they have told for centuries. Folk music, in its very nature wills the listener to connect with the past and so it seems only fitting for them to be accompanied by Team Hwæt! whose small press zine focuses on similar stories of times gone by, but not forgotten.
This very special show at The Golden Lion, Todmorden will see Katie and Johnny take to the stage and share their music with you in a seated setting. In between their sets, George and Bunty from Hwæt! Zine will regale the audience with regional folk tales, telling of witchcraft, wizardry and more, that surround the Calder Valley. Zines and other merch will be available to purchase on the night.
Katie Spencer
Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music.
