Long Legacies: American Abstract Women Painters, Past and Present

The event is organized in conjunction with the American Federation of Arts (AFA) in honor of its nationwide touring exhibition, Abstract Expressionists: The Women (2025–2027), which spotlights nearly fifty paintings made by thirty-two accomplished female artists between the 1940s and 1970s.

This roundtable discussion will bring together leading scholars, gallerists, and artists to consider the lasting impact made by women abstractionists on the course of American modern and contemporary art. Inspired by their profound yet understudied contributions to postwar art, our panel will plumb persistent gaps in the art historical canon while considering the role gender plays in the art world today.
