About this Event

Newbey Lowson of Darlington - Friend and pupil of J.M.W. Turner
Talk by Dr John Stanley

Until his retirement three years ago, John Stanley was a biochemist who worked primarily in academia at the University of Oxford.

John has traced his family back to Witton le Wear and has visited archives and libraries throughout the UK in search of documents relevant to the village’s history including Newbey Lowson one of the most high-profile residents of the village.

Newbey Lowson, originally of Darlington, was Turner’s travelling companion on his first visit abroad in 1802 to paint the Alps.

The talk will provide an account of the 1802 continental tour with Turner in France, Switzerland and Italy. John will present new information on Lowson’s wealthy family background in Darlington and his time in Witton le Wear. We will learn more about a missing Turner watercolour and hear some new ideas about who funded the 1802 visit.
