About this Event

CLOTHES SWAP

Clothes swaps are an opportunity to circulate clothes and accessories with other members of your community.

350,000 tonnes, that’s around £140 million worth of used but still wearable clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year and we want to prevent that from happening so bring your clothes along and swap for something new to you.

This clothes swap is happening during Refugee Week. The world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

We have the amazing Care4Calais joining us so if you'd like to learn more about the great work they do, you can meet them on the day or scroll down for a bit more info.

If you would like to donate specific items to Care4Calais they are looking for good quality mens clothing (not work/office items), womens and kids shoes (trainers etc.), and coats for everyone.

Only together can we make a difference.

Venue: Stratford Library, 3 The Grove, London, E15 1EL in the downstairs Community Area.

HOW IT WORKS

Please bring no more than 5 items of clothing, accessories and/or footwear freshly cleaned * and ready to go on the racks. We accept all shapes and sizes including children's clothing.

We offer a token system for customers who bring no more than 5 items. Items will be categorised into relevant tiers (1 token under £50, 2 tokens over £50) based on the type, brand, RRP and condition. This will dictate how many tokens you can use to shop for new items. 2 token items will have a yellow sticker assigned to them.

This is a community driven swap where we accept items from high street up to high end.

“Instead of buying new clothes, I wait to see what I can get at the next swap. Sometimes I get something to try that's a very different style to normal... After all, if I decide I don't like it, I can always swap it again! “

DROP 11:30- 15:00

Rolling drop and swap - You will be able to drop and swap all day from Midday until 3:30pm.

We open the doors for drop only at 11:30am, this gives us chance to populate the shop before we officially open the doors for swapping at 12:00pm.

Bring up to 5 items to trade for tokens. Items will be assessed by the Swap Shop Assistants on arrival and displayed on the rails. Once the items are traded for tokens they go straight onto the shop floor, so make sure you are 100% sure before you pass them over.

SWAP

12:00- 15:30

Browse the rails and use your token currency to exchange for new preloved items. You can only swap if you have dropped items during the drop period.

If you don't use all your tokens you can save and bring to the next clothes swap.

“I save things for swaps which I would otherwise take to charity / post on Vinted. These are honestly incredible events! “

Guided Repair Station

Sunny Jar will be hosting a free Guided Repair Station, giving support to participants in mending their own clothes; providing the tools and techniques needed to fix holes, buttons, or tears. It’s a hands-on, collaborative space designed to empower people to extend the life of their favourite garments rather than throwing them away.

You can drop in between 12-2pm.

Care4Calais

Care4Calais is a volunteer-based charity providing essential aid and support for refugees in northern France and the UK. They support through on-the-ground assistance, and advocate for a fair asylum system - including safe routes to the UK with refugee rights on arrival.

They work alongside people seeking safety to ensure access to daily essentials, and fill gaps where state support is not provided. They are here for everyone attempting to navigate the complexities of claiming asylum in the UK - providing access to justice, and practical, welcoming support.

Their vision is an inclusive society where people seeking safety have a safe home and a bright future free from inequality. In northern France they operate year round providing warm clothing, shoes, shelter, services, and assistance to refugees living in appalling conditions. Across the UK they collect and distribute clothes and other essential items, and provide social support and interaction. They also help with vital access to legal, medical and educational services.

Their work also involves organising successful campaigns against racist UK government policies, such as the Rwanda plan and the use of barracks and barges as accommodation for people seeking sanctuary.

You can find out more on our Instagram or website.
