About this Event

A winter walk filled with history, views, and quiet seasonal magic

Step into a slower winter’s day and explore one of North Wales’ most beautiful valleys. This guided circular walk blends dramatic hilltop views, peaceful riverside paths, and moments of stillness — with the added magic of snowdrops appearing across the landscape

Winter is a special time to be here: fewer crowds, crisp air, and a sense of calm you just don’t get in busier seasons. Snowdrop season is brief, making this a lovely chance to catch the Dee Valley at its most delicate and atmospheric.

This 12.5 km circular route takes us along muddy, grassy, and uneven footpaths, climbing steadily to open viewpoints before winding back into Llangollen. The pace is relaxed and supportive, with time to pause, take photos, and enjoy the surroundings.

We’ll finish back in town, perfectly placed for a warm drink or a wander through Llangollen’s independent shops — a well-earned reward after a day outdoors ☕

What Makes This Walk Special

🏰 Castell Dinas Brân

Rising above the valley, this medieval castle sits on an Iron Age hillfort and offers sweeping views across the Welsh countryside.

💧 Horseshoe Falls

A calm, scenic stretch where the canal meets the River Dee — peaceful and quietly impressive.

🌼 St Tysilio’s Church

A tranquil spot that often comes alive with snowdrops during winter, creating a truly seasonal moment.

🏛️ Valle Crucis Abbey

An atmospheric historic site we pass along the route, adding depth and story to the walk.

Is This Walk Right for Me?

This walk is intermediate level and ideal if you’re happy walking for several hours on uneven ground. You don’t need to be the fastest or most experienced — just open to a steady day outdoors with gentle challenge and plenty of support.

Group sizes are kept small to ensure a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and plenty of guidance throughout.

Who will be your guide?

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Janire, a fully qualified and insured Mountain Leader based in Shropshire. I’m passionate about making the outdoors accessible to everyone and strive to create a safe and welcoming environment for all. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or new to evening walks, this is a fantastic chance to enjoy nature, learn a little history, and experience a beautiful sunset from the view point. So grab a headtorch, bring a blanket and warm drink, and let’s enjoy a magical morning hike together!

Toilets:

There are public toilets in Llangollen town centre. You’ll need to embrace the ‘wild wee’ option during this hike! Just let us know, and we’ll ensure you have privacy. Remember to leave no trace!

Consent Form:

If you are booked onto the hike please fill in a CONSENT FORM no later than the 24 hours before. You will not be allowed to partake in the hike unless you have filled out this form.

Safety:

We like to make these hikes as enjoyable as possible for everyone, so we keep a steady pace. It's about taking in the views and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on these hikes, please either consult your doctor or let us know your concerns - We'd be happy to chat through any worries before you sign up to the hike.

I am a fully qualified Mountain Leader and hold a 16 hour Outdoor First Aid certificate so I will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Dogs:

We only accept dogs that are well-behaved and good around other dogs and strangers. If you bring your dog on a day hike, you are solely responsible for it, you must ensure it goes on the lead at appropriate times (around livestock, along roads and near cliff edges) and ensure you clean up after it- leave no trace applies to them as much as to humans.
