The Glasswork of Charlynne LafontaineLiving in a culture of appearance means existing in a society where physical looks and outward presentation are prioritized over deeper qualities like character or intelligence. This emphasis is driven by media, social platforms, and consumer industries promoting beauty standards that often feel unattainable. Social media amplifies these ideals, fostering comparison and validation through likes and followers. The focus on appearance can lead to issues like body image struggles, low self-esteem, and superficial judgments, where worth is tied to looks rather than abilities. It affects people of all genders and ages, fuelling consumerism and creating pressure to conform to societal ideals, often at the expense of authenticity and deeper connections.
Creating a body of work which considers the value of our obsession with appearance and our relationship with the products we utilize to enhance beauty as defined by our culture, has been the object of my artistic attention for nearly a decade. Within this body of work there are three series: the Hairbrush series, the Cosmetics series and the Perfume series. Through my work, I am contemplating the environmental impact of the manufacturing processes as well as the packaging and distribution of these products; all while questioning the necessity of employing them. I am investigating the effects cosmetics could have on the diversity of the human microbiome. I wonder whether the diminished use of these products could result in ecological, health and social benefits.
