833 Bute Street, Vancouver
Yutaro Saito is a Japanese photographer whose work examines fashion, consumer culture, and the relationship between clothing and personal identity. Born in 1994, he studied Global and Regional Studies at Doshisha University before beginning his photographic practice in 2021. That same year, he self-published the first edition of his ongoing photobook series, 20’s STREET STYLE JOURNAL, and participated in the Tokyo Art Book Fair.
He has since photographed for fashion brands in Japan and internationally and contributes writing about his work to FASHIONSNAP.
In NOT PLASTIC FASHION / LIFE, Saito considers what happens when clothing is experienced primarily as an image—circulated through social media and increasingly detached from material, function, and the body.
His photographs focus on people in their sixties, seventies, and eighties whose personal style has developed through lived experience rather than trends. Worn shoes, familiar jackets, practical choices, and repeated gestures reveal clothing that has become rooted in a person’s daily life.
Through these figures, Saito searches for a form of personal style that begins with the self—one shaped over time by the body, memory, habit, and use.
