Overview:
This practical full-day course is designed to strengthen teaching assistants’ understanding of how children learn to read and spell, with a focus on the principles of systematic synthetic phonics and the practical strategies that support learners to practise and apply these skills. The session will help participants support phonics teaching, reinforce learning in the classroom, and provide effective intervention where needed.
Target audience: HLTAs and Teaching Assistants.
Session aims:
To develop a clear understanding of how children learn to read and spell; provide effective in-class support during phonics teaching; support phonics through play-based and authentic learning opportunities; and recognise and respond to learner needs while working in partnership with the class teacher. This session is for Swansea school employees only.
