Join us for a Cuban percussion workshop with musician & educator Brian Rice! 🪘🇨🇺The workshop will be on Thursday 4/30 from 6:00-7:30 at the YoloArts Gibson House. This lesson is accessible for non-dancers and dancers alike, although we will allow more time for dance connection rather than only lecture.
This workshop, led by percussionist Brian Rice, is designed for dancers who want to deepen their connection to Cuban music through active listening and movement. Drawing on his expertise in Cuban musical traditions, Brian will guide participants in recognizing and understanding the roles of key percussion instruments such as congas, bongó, timbales, and clave.
Through a combination of focused listening exercises and guided dancing, students will learn to identify rhythmic patterns and respond to them physically. The class will explore a variety of Cuban styles, helping dancers tune their ears to the nuances that drive each genre. Participants will develop greater musicality, timing, and confidence on the dance floor by learning not just to move to the music, but to move with specific instruments.
No prior music training is required—just a willingness to listen, move, and explore the conversation between rhythm and dance.

🔹Brian Rice studied Afro-Cuban folkloric music and drumming with Regino Jimenez, Jesus Alfonso, Roberto Borrell, Sandy Perez, and many others in Cuba, the US, and Canada
🔹Brian teaches the Afro-Cuban Ensemble which he founded in 2017 at UC Davis
🔹Brian has played with salsa bands and Latin jazz bands since the early 1990s and founded the Afro-Cuban Folkloric Collective in Seattle in 1995. Brian played with the danzón orchestra La Moderna Tradición from 1997-2004
