DAUGHTER OF THE WESTSongs of Chinatowns, Japanese plantation workers and the Old West
Santa Fe-based musician Lisa Kori will take the stage with a full band to present "Daughter of the West," a project inspired by the history and musical contributions of Asian-Americans in the American West.
“As a musician of Japanese and Chinese descent with a love of folk music, I’ve been wondering what songs my Chinese ancestors brought to the U.S. when they emigrated during the gold rush, and what songs my Japanese ancestors sang while working the sugar plantations of Hawaii. I wonder about the arduous labor of the Chinese who built the railroads, and wish I could hear their work songs. Why didn’t their music become part of the landscape? My music imagines what it would sound like if elements of Japanese and Chinese music had become a natural part of American roots music. This collection of songs is a collection of Asian-American hopes and dreams.”
"Daughter of the West" features Lisa Kori on guitar and vocals, alongside a diverse ensemble of musicians whose musical backgrounds bridge the cultures of Chinese immigrants, Japanese immigrants, and the American West.
Danting Qiao (NY) is the former concertmaster of the Peking University Chinese Orchestra and will be playing erhu, a two-stringed Chinese fiddle.
Jake Larcqua (CO) is an ethnomusicologist who studies Japanese music and culture under master Yoko Hiraoka. He will be joining on shamisen, a Japanese stringed instrument with similarities to a banjo.
Matt Orenstein (CA) is a bassist, composer and audio engineer based in Los Angeles. He will be joining on Bass VI, a six stringed electric bass.
Paul Pearcy (CO) is an accomplished percussionist who will be joining on drum kit and gong, whose credits include The Chicks, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and James McMurtry.
And last but not least, Don Richmond (CO), is a skilled multi-intrumentalist known for his longstanding contributions to Southwest Americana, including groups such as Tumbleweed, Hired Hands, and the New Mexico-based band the Rifters. He will be playing an assortment of Western stringed instruments.
